My First Marathon Training Plan

Ever since I finished my 9+1 last November and received my guaranteed entry to the New York City Marathon for this year, I’ve had people asking me how I was going to approach my training. It’s no secret that I’ve never followed a training plan before. I’m not particularly fond of doing things just because someone else is telling me to (“because I said so” is probably my least favorite response to “why”?) and even though I considered trying to stick to something for my first half, when I was able to do it after figuring it out for myself I simply carried on that way. Yet the marathon is different. To successfully cross the finish line I need to get advice from those who have been there before and use a training plan so that I stay on track. I think I’ve now settled on my first marathon training plan, but getting there was definitely a process.

WIAW #55: Eggs All Day

Today’s WIAW features eggs all day. They really are incredible 🙂 It kicked off with a different kind of breakfast for me. Instead of the usual omelet or quinoa flake breakfast bake, I had a couple of hard boiled eggs along with an apple, carrot and raisin salad left over from lunch the prior day. This could also be construed as an eat-whatever’s-in-my-work-fridge meal, but it was a pretty good sweet and savory combination.

Weekly Workouts and Updates 4/18-4/25

If you can believe it, I’m coming at you with my last weekly workout recap of the month of April! This month felt like it was going by slower than the first few of the year while it was happening. Then spring finally settled in for good late enough that it feels like we’re heading straight into summer and I don’t know where the time went. Which is what I always say.

Five Songs I’m Loving This Spring

Hello and happy Friday! I’m coming at you with a Five Things I’m Loving This Friday (resurrected after a long absence, save for my Five blog survey) focused on five songs I’m loving this spring. In that survey, I mentioned five songs I’d been playing on repeat. Well, those five are still some of my favorites, and pretty close to the ones I’m sharing here, but there are more in the rotation that have been especially prominent lately. They’re perfect for the season, as the weather finally warms up for good, the sun is shining and we have lots going on, and honestly a few of them are perfect road tunes that got stuck in my head when we were driving to Philadelphia that will definitely be in the mix for our upcoming trip to Maine! Also, they’re all country-esque, just the mood I’m in I guess 🙂

Thoughts on Food: Now and Then

This Sunday, after my runger finally stopped raging and I had not been the nicest person to be around for a few hours in the afternoon, I got to thinking about my relationship to food a year ago, or two or five or ten, as compared to what it currently is. There’s a huge difference between now and then, and I’m grateful for it, but change didn’t happen overnight. It was gradual over time, so that sometimes I’m still surprised when I realize how far I’ve come.

WIAW #54: A Rungry Sunday

I’ve shared the depths of my runger on this blog many times, first in a WIAW last July and most recently in one featuring my New York City Half Marathon weekend eats. Today’s WIAW is from another rungry Sunday, this past one, when I ran the MORE Women’s Half Marathon and subsequently was so demanding where food and drink were concerned that I thought my boyfriend was going to lose it. Luckily, he’s a trooper and puts up with me and my runger 🙂

Weekly Recap and the MORE Women’s Half Marathon

Yesterday, I ran my third half marathon of 2016 at the MORE Women’s Half Marathon in Central Park. I’ll share my weekly workouts and then get to the race recap and other scenes from the weekend. Actually, first I’m going to show you all this beautiful creature I spotted on my walk home from work on Tuesday, because puppies are priorities. But after that!

Quinoa Flake Breakfast Bake

When I featured this breakfast on Instagram and in my “behind the Instagram” WIAW post, I got a lot of comments about how delicious it looked and requests for a recipe. I pointed people to my recipe for a Baked Quinoa Flax Cake, but realized that since beginning to use quinoa flakes instead of oats for my baked breakfast cakes a few months ago, I’ve been experimenting and varying ingredients just like I used to with my oatmeal cakes. My current favorite version is a little different than the recipe I posted in January, and now I’m sharing it here. This Quinoa Flake Breakfast Bake is the perfect grain free way to begin your day, and also a neat little vehicle for peanut butter, chocolate chips, fruity jam, or other delicacies to make their mark on your morning.

Racing For Fun

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about running and racing for fun. As I’ve mentioned many times on this blog, when I first started running, I made a promise to myself that I would not ever let it become just another competitive activity. I took every activity I tried very seriously when I was a kid, and running was going to be something I did just for me, to have fun, get outside in the fresh air, and get away from the craziness of life in law school. And then, about six months after I started running, I entered my first 10K race.

WIAW #53: Spring Beach Weekend Eats

This WIAW is all about my eats from a weekend at the shore. It won’t be what you’d expect from a typical beach weekend, because even though it was April it was actually snowing on Saturday and lots of the boardwalk eateries were shuttered, but you will see lots of eggs, and of course, some ice cream. Because that happens no matter which way the weather goes.
